"Pearl-clutcher" Painting by Stefanie Girard Artist 2023
-Noun. pearl-clutcher (idiomatic, derogatory) A prim, prudish, or easily offended person.
-Material- Acrylic on canvas
When a lady gasps in shock and raises her hand to her neck adorned with pearls.
-The phrase pearl clutching, which means being shocked by something once-salacious that should now be
seen as commonplace.
- I combined the raised fist, the global symbol for fighting oppression,
with a string of pearls being broken as a way to symbolize that the old prudish ways should end.
- The little sewing needles with butterfly wings and the thread "antenna"
are meant to symbolize mending and our ability to put things back together, hopefully better.
The quotes around the perimeter are:
"You got to figure out which end of the needle you gon be, the one that's fastened to the thread or the one
that pierces the cloth." ~Sue Monk Kidd
"What you don't understand you can make mean anything."
"Life is a balance of holding on and letting go."
"F.U.B.A.R."
"Nolite Te Bastardes Carborundorum" (“Don't let the bastards grind you down”)
"Because I said so."
"Pinkie Swear"
"Object-Defy"
"Don't make me take my earrings off."
"2 words, 1 finger"
Close up of the sewing needle butterflies with thread antenna that represent the ability to mend our relationships with each other.
